Begin with the sentence most of this site hangs on: there is a way things are. Not a way for you and a way for me — a way, full stop, indifferent to preference, party, or mood.

Consider what a group of people becomes when it stops believing it. Disputes do not vanish; they merely lose their referee. Where no fact of the matter exists, no argument can end except by exhaustion or force — and exhaustion is just force on a delay.
